Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Kevin A — 20 May 2015
A story rooted in 20th century horrors, Helen Mirren is superb, yet a bit too tightly wound as elderly Jewish woman who discovers that the "Mona Lisa" of Austria was owned by her family and that it should be returned to her.
Ryan Reynolds is excellent as her dedicated and dog tired nephew who becomes her lawyer to fight a battle he has no idea how to start, let alone win. Win she does and it is a delightful story from beginning to end.
It is the sort of film that leaves you with the feeling that you are glad you saw it. Jonathan Pryce as US Supreme Court Chief Justice Rehnquist (Pryce was a James Bond villian earlier) and he's a hoot.
This film will resonate with your sense of right and wrong, good versus evil and righting wrongs. Unfortunately it is sad to note that there appears to be greater concern over computer models projecting climate change than concern for the new fascism that threatens the free world from Iran, Syria, Lybia and elsewhere.
Bear that in mind after you see this wonderful film.
