Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Sandy K — 02 Feb 2016
Based on the true story of Maria Altmann in her quest to reclaim family paintings from an Austrian museum, testing the Austrian government's claim to offer restitution for Nazi thefts before and during WWII.
Although Helen Mirren really is too young to play the part of Altmann, she is riveting in this role, and Ryan Reynolds is very convincing depicting the young lawyer who is unwillingly drawn into helping Altmann, only to find himself gradually obsessed with finding justice for her.
There are well-crafted flashbacks to when the Nazis descended on Vienna, poignantly explaining the undercurrent of Altmann's vulnerabilities and pain.
