Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Stephanie H — 09 Jun 2016
Surprisingly good performance from Ryan Reynolds in a serious role for once, but of course Helen Mirren was excellent, as she always is. This story hits me close to home, because my father's family had paintings furnishings and property in land and buildings confiscated by the Nazis after my father and his brother (their family was Christian Scientist) left Germany in the early 30s.
They never were compensated for the furnishings and artwork, and for the real estate, they received about one cent per hundred dollars of the value. And what they got, they received because me uncle had worked in Army Intelligence during WWII--an American spy in Germany, since he could speak German without an American accent--he was 14 when he left Germany originally.
So this movie about restitution affected me greatly--to know that some survivors finally got some justice.
