Review of Wolf Creek (2005) by Matthew M — 15 Mar 2012
Staying just on the right side of scary for the majority, "Wolf Creek" squanders most of its potential by becoming more an exercise in torture porn than concentrating on the tense atmosphere it had created.
McLean directs well, and the performances are all brilliant for such a low-budget film, the handheld camera making this world seem horribly realistic and disgustingly true. Wolf Creek's main problem, though, is that it builds up a suitably intimidating and mysterious villian, plays around with an amazingly tense atmosphere and throws the audience into the confused mentality of the victims, but wastes it by doing nothing exceptional with them - it just becomes another "shock for the sake of shock" revalue of the horror film.
