Review of Wolf Creek (2005) by Kristal C — 21 Oct 2009
First of all I can't believe I mustered the courage to watch this film that I avoided for years due to all the controversy surrounding it and the intense gruesome scenes as critics and viewers commented. Second, the MOST disturbing aspect of the movie is that it is based on real events- OMG..Inspired by Australia's backpacker killer who murdered seven backpackers during the 90's, Wolf Creek may have won wide acclaim from critics and audience members but it is not my kind of movie at all. I was very disappointed with the script and the story line because the characters had a chance to kill this man and totally blew it..the storyline is as follows: three college kids take off for a drive across Australia. I will mention that the first 40 mins of the film was real nice- the mountain and ocean views of Australia were phenomenal..such beauty! Amazing country side, sunsets and sunrise shots, plus incredible shots of the area where a meteorite hit the ground..
Anyways I dont want to digress..so the college students are driving across Australia in a very cheap station wagon. They go to Wolf Creek national park to check out the spot where a meteorite hit the earth years ago..When the trio returns from a 3 hour hike at Wolf Creek, they notice that their car is dead. Help comes in the form of a big, back-slapping bushman named Mick. Since Mick comes across as a friendly, happy go lucky man, the trio trusts him to tow their car back to his place in the hopes of fixing it so they can return back on the road but alas fate has something else in store for them. Something very violent.
I saw the unrated dvd version but honestly it is not that gruesome nor violent. Moreover, since this guy does not remotely resemble a Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers, he seems normal and likeable but that is a fa§adeâ¦he is actually a serial killer whoâs hobby is to befriend tourists that go to Wolf Creek. While they are hiking or checking the area, he disables their vehicles, then shows up later and offers assistance. Takes them to a very remote area in the Australian woods, and tortures them to death. The viewer discovers that during the film as one of the protagonists stumbles across newspaper clippings of missing tourists, then sees a bunch of video cameras piled up which belonged to the dead tourists..he would dump the bodies in a very remote location but basically that was his MO (modus operandi)â¦folks that is disturbing- how someone got away with that for so long and the ending will most certainly disturb you..I found it shocking to tell you the truth. Perplexing to say the least. This movie starts out great and becomes very depressing so think twice before watching it. I did not like the ending at all but at least now I can say I saw it.
