Review of Witness for the Prosecution (1957) by Matthew B — 31 Aug 2010
Charles Laughton gives the performance of a lifetime as Sir Wilfred Robarts, and his saucy repartee with Elsa Lanchester's Nurse Plimsoll is some of the foxiest to be found ("Sir Wilfred, I have never known such insubordination - no, not even when I was a nurse on the frontlines during the War!" / "Which war was that? The Crimean War, no doubt!").
Marlene Dietrich, unfortunately, is a bit wooden as Christine Vole, but Tyrone Power, Torin Thatcher, Una O'Connor (delightfully cantankerous as the Scotch maid Janet McKenzie), and Norma Varden form a splendid cast.
