Review of Witness for the Prosecution (1957) by Scott M — 05 Aug 2009
A powerful court room drama with a mesmerizing performance by Charles Laughton. The tone of the movie may prove to be a little off for Americans since this is set in England and their court system which provides a unique perspective that makes this seem fresh.
Tyrone Power plays the suave womanizer well and Marlene Dietrich is perfect as the steely blond wife but it is Laughton who carries the movie with his presence and voice both of which make you shrink in your seat just a little as he is so intimidating. Well to everyone except his nurse, Elsa Lanchester ( yes, from The Bride of Frankenstein) who is just as stubborn as he is and provides a release for all the tension as the movie progresses.
The ending is one of the great movie endings of all time.
