Review of Witness for the Prosecution (1957) by Hm F — 02 Jun 2012
Billy Wilder's 1957 adaption of Agatha Christie's short story Witness for the Prosecution is probably one of the finest showcases for the talent and charisma of Charles Laughton. The actor dominates the film from his first frame and you can barely stand it when he's not in a scene.
His scenes as he grapples with the unfolding plot, doing his best to figure out the truth as well as win his case are pure entertainment. The sparks with his wife, Bride of Frankenstein herself, Elsa Lanchester are a hoot to watch.
When the movie ends you instantly wish they had made sequels. Tyrone Power gives a solid performance that is critical to the twist of the film, but Marlene Dietrich is somewhat one-note and hard to take.
The movie has twists right up to the very end, this is not one to leave early from.
