Review of Without a Clue (1988) by Paul A — 25 Aug 2009
The central concept is clever but it's the performances that make this film stand out from the crowd. Much overlooked, this deserves to be more widely recognised as the comedy classic that it undoubtedly is.
It has all the elements of a Sherlock Holmes mystery, with all the farcical comedy of a Marx Brothers film. It's anarchic, in a way with 'Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother' tried desperately to be, and it's as dramatic and action-packed as any Sherlock Holmes film to date.
Quoteable lines, memorable performances, and a feelgood factor that makes you smile throughout. It's obviously not to everyone's taste ("They've made Sherlock Holmes a drunken dimwit!! Sacrelige!!") but it's a watertight comedy of words and situations that will make you giggle constantly throughout.
