Review of Without a Clue (1988) by Steve M — 28 Jun 2004
Its been quite a week. I just got Hughes into his cab and he took off after a whole week of movies, booze, hamburger helper and serious injury..
We watched so many movies. I put some notables up there in the reviews. The first three are ones I had never seen, and then for Bad Santa we watched the "Badder" Santa edition and I only noticed two scenes that were different. But it actually played a little better for me. It went from barely a 7 to a solid 7, knocking on the door of 8. The last one was a surprise hit with Chris, I figured he would enjoy it but not love it as much as he actually did. It played just as well for me the second time around and moved just as fast through its 155 minutes. .
Friday night we went to a pretty kickin house party at Corey's. Corey is a friend of Kyle's that I met a couple weeks ago. There was ping-pong, trampoline, drunken hugs from Sara, followed by drunken movie conversations at my place with everything capped off with another viewing of The Big Lebowski. .
Saturday I had to get up and go to work stll drunk to help out for a few hours. Then I came home to get a nap and was interrupted by my roommate Paul, having locked himself out. When I acted none too thrilled with having to get up and let him in, he acted all offended. Right. Its all my fault that he is not respoinsible enough to carry a key to his own apartment. Whenever I used to lock myself out of places at school I was only mad at myself because I learned at a young age that I was a screwup. Some people just take longer to learn I guess..
Saturday night was kind of a bust. Sunday morning, Chris and I were discussing it and he summed it up with this phrase: "At least you didnt get hit by that car!" He was referring of course to my drunken antics on the walk home where I ran across the street and made it 3/4 of the way across before falling, wiping out in the gravel and skidding across the pavement on my left elbow. A car was coming at the time and the ostensibly drunk driver did not even slow down. So after hearing Chris scream "Steve, that car's not slowing down!" I had to crawl out of the road and dust myself off as it whizzed by and showered me with more dust and gravel. But I am getting ahead of myself..
So anyways Saturday was to be a big night on the town. Several people expressed interest, several calls were made. But very few calls were received when push came to shove. One person alleges that my phone was not working, yet a couple of people got through. Sara, for one, managed to come out and have herself a Corona. Nate, who I havent really mentioned, met up with us at our last stop. So the phone was working. Kyle is the one who might be in some trouble as I got this sob story from him about his mom forcing him to stay home to celebrate his dad's birthday and then get up early Sunday to go to church. Yet when I talked to a couple of his friends they were like "No man, he's out at the cabin with Erin." Erin is his new flame. I dont really like looking like a fool or being lied to and I have a feeling that both happened this weekend, which would be out of character for Kyle. He isnt perfect but lying to blow me off for a girl is kind of a dick move. I am an understanding person who can be told the truth. I get over the truth a lot quicker than lies. My theory is that he has yet to even call me, 3 days after the fact, because he knows I found out and he knows what conversation we need to have next and he isnt ready for it. I hope I'm wrong. I do. I had more fun hanging out with Chris this week than I have had with anybody around here in the last year. It kind of put things in perspective and re-awakened my itch to move out..
But Steve, what about the new job?????.
Well I had my second interview of three. It went well, it sounds like a really good job. It sounds like I have a decent (so to speak) shot at it but its by no means a lock. If I dont get it, then it looks like September or October I am packing up the car and heading east. .
It was bound to happen, its been over 2 years since the last one. I was taken to the ER on sunday after injuring the same ankle that I hurt back in 2000. It had been since July 2002 since I had visited the ER on a gurney. I was playing baseball with uncles, aunts, cousins and random relatives. I rounded second and my ankle twisted at an awkward angle and let out a crack heard all the way back at home plate and I went down hard in the spot where the dirt of the infield and the grass of the outfield meet. The diagnosis is severe sprain and possible fracture. I even became dehydrated (they refused to give me water) and semi-delirious on the slab they layed me on. But once the drugs and the water kicked in, I was back as close to 100% as I could be with one good leg and an elbow that still smarted from the night before's shenanigans. I will find out the details of my injury Thursday when I visit Dr. Nolan the Orthopedist and ask him if he is any relation to the brilliant Christopher Nolan, writer and director of Memento. Then he will laugh at me. The swelling will have gone down enough to see whats up with it by then. I am on crutches and off the schedule at work for a few more days. So its even MORE time to sit and watch movies. Which is good because I bought myself a few the other day and right before that, Chris bought me a couple as thanks for all the room and board. I told him it was unnecessary but I sensed it was his parents' money anyway so I didnt fight it too hard. But yeah I am off my pain medication and its feeling a bit better. I took a couple of tentative steps tonight and put a bit of weight on it and did not collapse like a sack of potatoes, so thats a good sign. But I still need the crutches to really get around and I certainly cant drive since it is the right ankle. That put the kibosh on my plans to see Spider Man 2 tonight at midnight. Damn..
