Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Vijay M — 04 Jul 2008
I can only "review" this from a 2008 perspective, not a 1987 one. The dialogue, particularly Withnail's, is brilliant in its mad, acerbic, drunken wit. I can see why this film is such a cult favourite, and I imagine it's mostly to do with Richard's brilliant performance and the hilarious dialogue.
I suppose the notion that gay dudes force themselves on straight guys is an antiquated notion, so seeing the film as a 1987 film and not a contemporary one is important. I'd watch this again and again, just for Richard's dialogue.
