Classic comedy and marvellous character study from Bruce Robinson. Exuberantly poisonous performance by Richard E. Grant as the raging, cadaverous, pitiful, charismatic, endlessly watchable Withnail and the titular "I," or Marwood, portrayed as a seeming innocent by Paul McGann.
Also excellent is Richard Griffiths as Withnail's uncle Monty. Richard E. Grant carries the film's thorny, tragic soul.
