Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Michael T — 07 Mar 2009
A film set in 1969 that doesn't hit one over the head with a "hey, this is in the 1960s" vibe. This is a nice quiet film that features some very funny moments revolving around debts to drug dealers, psychotic Irishmen, sinister rural farmer types, and Withnail's uncle Monty.
Ultimately, the film is somewhat tragic and sad. Paul McGann would later play DOCTOR WHO in the ill-advised BBC/FOX attempt to relaunch the series in 1996. The film was released by UK's Handmade Films, a British distribution company which helped a number of small UK and American productions get distribution.
Some of the more interesting independent films of the 1980s were Handmade Films.
