Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Tonia S — 26 Aug 2009
The one cult film that will continue to draw followers from generations to come. A brilliant summary of British counterculture, vividly sketched and playfully delivered. Where it's weightless on plotting, it makes up with such unforgettable character creations of Grant's hilariously theatrical Withnail, McGann's level-headed Marwood and Griffiths' flamboyant-eccentric joie-de-vivre Uncle Monty. What's more remarkable is Withnail & I's ability to find humour in many of its sad and tragic moments - and they're all endlessly quotable.
RATING: A+.
