Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Bob V — 08 Nov 2010
Richard E Grant is very much like grumpy complaining Victor from 'one foot in the grave'. This film doesn't really go anywhere, and nothing really happens. I struggled to watch it. The two main characters are good , Grant does remind me of one of 'the young ones' He is a great actor.
..but the 'story' wasn't interesting enough to make me watch it again. The scene in the bed with the shotgun reminded me of Laurel and Hardy....although they were pure class...and this isn't.
It's not a bad little film, just not the classic I was expecting. I don't consider it a comedy as there were no laughs. Just a couple of lads boozing a weekend away.
