Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Ed F — 22 Jan 2011
Based on Robinson's own life, this film essentially showcases the two different mindsets that aspiring actors can take: either keep searching and take what you can get or feel you are above small parts and escape into addiction.
While the story is at-times humorous it generally seems quite pointless. The appeal of this film comes from two sources: the dialogue and Withnail. Most of the humor comes from the rapid-fire, witty and quotable dialogue.
Withnail is the source of a lot of this and is quite a character. Simultaneously witty, rude, talented, and a wreck of a human being, Withnail is someone you can't stop watching even if you loathe him and all he represents.
He's like a walking train wreck that just defies all logic and refuses to lose momentum. This is an enjoyable film that will find particular resonance among those who have ever taken up acting.
