Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Gavin S — 21 Dec 2013
I enjoyed it, but it was so unlike most things I have watched I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. However, I did enjoy very much Ralph Brown as Danny the drug-dealer philosopher, and the late Richard Griffiths is superb as the randy Uncle Monty.
Richard E. Grant just goes right over the top, which is perfect for an actor who can't find work in 1969 London. Paul McGann is a great counterpoint to his manic, as the more depressive of the 2 unemployable actors.
I think this would be funnier with repeated viewings, as some movies are; needing to grow on you and become familiar. I did find numerous parts funny, but the very sad undertones almost diluted the laughs.
Worth a watch though, but definitely an original!
