Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Jennifer A — 27 Sep 2009
This critically acclaimed cult classic didn't entirely win me over.
Withnail and I (1988) - 6.2/10.
Director - Bruce Robinson.
Starring - Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann, Richard Griffiths, Ralph Brown, Michael Elphick.
It's 1969 Britian and two unemployed actors Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and I (Paul McGann) share a messy apartment. Withnail is fond of digs and I decides it's time to assimilate into society. Together they take a trip to the country hoping to find themselves.
I was really looking forward to seeing this considering it's glowing reviews and it's status as an all-time cult classic. I must say I was underwhelmed. I will try to elaborate but first the film's bright spots. It's extremely well-written filled with quotable, witty dialogue. The actors generally seem to be having a good time. So why did I have such a lukewarm reaction to the film? Well I never really connected with either character so their quest to find themselves never fully drew me in. While I could laugh at some of their escapades I never felt emotionally invested. Or perhaps the humor was just too "British" for my tastes. For whatever reason I certainly left this film feeling somewhat underwhelmed.
