Review of Witchboard (1986) by Jenni H — 25 Apr 2006
Witchboard.
Starring: Todd Allen, Tawny Kitaen, and Stephen Nichols.
Director: Kevin Tenney.
When Linda (Kitaen) plays around with a Ouija Board by herself, she attracts the attention of an evil and very powerful spirit. Her current and ex-boyfriends, Jim and Brandon (Allen and Nichols), must set aside their differences to stop the spirits murderous rampage.
"Witchboard" is a light-weight horror movie that hits all the standard "evil poltergeist on the loose" marks as it progresses through its storyline. The dialogue is a bit on the weak side, but the film's got above average acting for a movie of this type, some genuinely creepy and startling moments, and a great climactic scene. (Although, the greastest supernatural mystery in the film is how Tawny Kitaen manages to retain her 1980s-style big hair even just after a shower.).
This is a fun fright-fest with just enough gore and swearing to earn it an R-rating. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but there are worse ways to waste a couple of hours than watching it. (The little Ouija Board that was included in the Achor Bay DVD release of the film was a nice touch as far as packaging goes. The commentary track with director Tenney was also enjoyable and informative.).
