Review of Wish I Was Here (2014) by Mike D — 25 Jul 2014
"WIsh I was here" is a movie with a profound message that addresses many metaphysical questions, including the meaning of life and how society addresses many difficult topics, including illness and death.
The movie does not leave much to the imagination; you will feel angst and heartache in parts. The characters are all very spunky and zany, especially Zach Braff, propelling this off-beat comedy into a league of its own uniqueness.
Most of the characters in the movie, including Kate Hudson's character, are very individualistic, and they almost scream self-righteous. I feel that some of the motifs in the film are overdone, creating a somewhat campy feel to the movie, but in spots where the movie delivers, it really does.
There are heartbreaking moments in the film, but there are also triumphant ones as well that enable Braff to find meaning in difficult times. This movie was very hard to grade due to its off-color feel and the challenging concepts it explores, but I fell the zaniness of this movie mostly worked ----------------------------------------- B.
