Review of Wish I Was Here (2014) by Tyson P — 29 Jul 2014
It was a good movie, the critics are exactly that-critical.
It has a good mix of comic relief to help lighten the mood of a story where two sons struggle with saying good bye to their ill father and reconciling past disappointments between fathers and sons.
Personally, I like Mandy Patinkin and think he's a good actor, and Kate Hudson was fine in the role for what it was. For me, the story and the interplay of familial relationships really knocked it out of the park for me.
I'm sentimental, and the fond memories of my father override the negative ones. Seeing a story that deals with those topics, which is complimented by how the protagonist's own relationship with his father affects his method of fathering his children strikes a cord with me.
The details of how a child becomes an adult, and then possibly a parent, and then through attrition ends up the Patriarch or Matriarch of their family is another aspect that I connected with.
-Sure some of the topics have been covered in other media and other movies, but the execution here was heartfelt and worthwhile. I'm surprised by the negativity of the critics and expect that perhaps their expectations and point of view may have lead to them not liking the movie as much as I did.
-Best movie in the genera I've seen in a while.
