Review of Wish I Was Here (2014) by Chris Q — 02 Aug 2014
When I first saw it, I liked it. This film wasn't agonizing to watch, but in retrospect and the more I thought of it, it wasn't good at all. This movie is heartwarming but is extremely clichà (C)d and there was not a part that I did not know what would happen next.
Every storyline in the movie had been done before and a lot better than this. People who like this movie and think it is sweet have not seen that many movies or like sappy/predictable story lines. You expect me to get sad when the father is dying and needs to reconnect with one of his sons before he dies, WHO HASN'T SEEN THAT BEFORE.
They also try to make some statement about life when there isn't one. There is a conversation between Zach Braff and Kate Hudson's characters when she asks him when was the happiest you've seen me and he replies when she was surfing.
The at the end of the movie, for no apparent reason, it shows her surfing. The whole movie is filled with stuff like this. That doesn't mean there wasn't anything good about it, the acting is decent, the soundtrack is passable and the direction is ok, but in the end it all goes back to the script.
I am not surprised that they had trouble finding studio funding thus making them go to Kickstarter. I also forgot to say that this movie is not funny AT ALL. And it's supposed to be a comedy. Overall, I would not recommend this movie unless you would like to watch a clichà (C)d, sappy movie that would probably make most people feel sad but not me.
