Review of Wish I Was Here (2014) by Kairi F — 14 Oct 2014
I haven't seen a movie this forced in a very long time. Unfortunately the sometimes brilliant Braff buries his film in a very below average screenplay that simply doesn't allow enough time for any of its characters to develop or connect with an audience.
Josh Gad does his best with what little he has, Joey King works hard but some bad editing gives her an uneven performance, Hudson is trying but she has nothing of interest in the film and Braff does fine but often crosses that line between powerful and lame.
The film wants you to be moved so badly that it's painfully obvious and ultimately has the reverse effect. Whilst the film reeks of that Garden State vibe, unlike its predecessor the film screams "love me, I'm unique and powerful" without realising that it's the audience that gets to make that decision.
