Review of Wish I Was Here (2014) by Jan V — 06 May 2015
Title: Mildly interesting 3-generations family drama. Could have been much better given the ingredients.
Saw this at the Leiden film festival 2015 (LIFF). Mildly interesting 3-generations family drama, completely failed to involve me in the relationships between family members and/or the respective (3) generations. A bit of humor included every now and then was nice, but did not rescue the movie. Predictable outcome (paterfamilias dies, everyone present while holding hands, last minute reunion), but the obvious feel-good attempt did not work on me. Middle-of-the-road dilemma's, nothing special, recognizable for everyone, yet I did not care. Much about following your dreams versus raising an income, about your father being proud on you, and more along that line. The ingredients were there, and this could have been so much better. Yet the festival visitors awarded an average score of 4.08 (out of 5), so what do I know.
