Review of WiseGirls (2002) by Charles W — 09 Jun 2008
I have seen this movie several times, usually with others. The overwhelming conclusion is, "What happened?
Where has this movie been? How could we have possibly missed such a gem?". First, I am not a Mariah Carey basher nor lover, don't even know her. But she nails this part. Mira Sorvino, as usual is a class act in a very sensitive role.
Arthur Nascarella is absolutely perfect as the mob boss. Where has he been? Where is he now? Well I understand he was a cop for 20 years and a marine for 9. He certainly looks the part (either). "Wisegirls" does not even appear in his movie credits.
Ignore whatever you have read or heard about this movie. Want do give your friends a treat? Then invite them over for a viewing of "WISEGIRLS" and have a blast. They will love you for it. I have, several times. And it has never failed. Many often return for a second viewing. It's just that kind of movie.
Oh. The plot. I haven't talked about it because there are a couple of twists that could ruin it for you. Just know that it involves a very sensitive girl who has had a bad experience, goes to live with her grandmother temorarily and gets a job in an Italian resturant. There she meets and bonds with two other waitresses.
It is the experiences that these three girls share that make the movie. There are adult situations, graphic violence and crime. There is also fun and laughter. What a wonderful combination for a group show. See it! See it!!!
