Review of Wise Blood (1979) by Eric F — 24 Jul 2009
Manâ?¦this is just an awesome film. Based on the mad novel by Flannery Oâ??Conner, Brad Dourif gives a great performance (possibly my favorite Dourif role) as the hateful, ignorant, and horrid but also deeply sad Hazel Motes.
I just love these characters. Dourifâ??s pathetic Atheist preacher. Harry Dean Stantonâ??s scheming blind beggar preacher. Ned Beattyâ??s huckster preacher. William Hickeyâ??s drunk preacher. And Dan Shorâ??s Enoch Emory! So sad.
Him in that Gonga The Gorilla costume, breaks the heart. John Huston may always be remembered for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre or The African Queen or even for his few moments in Chinatown, but damn Wise Blood holds a special place in my heart.
Definitely my favorite release from Criterion this year. VF.
