Review of Winter's Tale (2014) by Brent A — 15 Feb 2014
Since I hadn't read the source novel, I went into this movie not knowing what to expect. Needless to say, the tonal shift towards the beginning of the film was unexpected. That said, I thought the acting was really good.
Russell Crowe was perfect as the villain, Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley were charming in their roles, and the film was beautifully directed by Akiva Goldsman. (Amusing to see actors from his previously scripted films appearing in smaller roles such as Jennifer Connelly.
There was one jarring cameo as well that I won't spoil for those who haven't seen this film yet, but I don't think it had the effect the filmmakers wanted. Oh well.) I do think they could have developed the story a bit more as some of the character motivations were a bit unclear.
(I'm sure the book fleshes things out more; I will probably be reading it.) Nevertheless, I was in the right mood for this film, an adult fairy tale, and I came away charmed and pleasantly surprised by it.
