Review of Winter's Tale (2014) by Rob W — 25 Jul 2014
I have not read the book, so I'm basing this on just the film. It's not a perfect film, and I can tell that through editing some explanations for things were cut. And it appears as if it was difficult to transition from book to film and still keep some of the magic.
As a result some scenes ended up being a bit awkward. The film was filled with many sweet, touching and tearful moments. The soundtrack was fantastic. Will Smith was miscast. I don't understand the immense dislike for the film.
Films that involve magical realism are rather underappreciated along with movies that tackle difficult subjects like destiny/fate/reincarnation. I appreciated the mixing of realism with fantasy. Glad I gave this fantasy thriller a chance.
It made the audience think without relying on an overload of visual effects just to qualify as fantasy, even the horse was rather subtle in its mysticism.
