I read the book, thoroughly enjoyed it, and the movie is excellent also! It is a fairy tale and should be taken as one! The acting was excellent, especially by Russell Crowe playing the bad guy. The last few minutes of narration was the worst part of the movie.
..take it for what it is and watch it with an open mind!
