Have you ever tried to watch a DVD so scratched up, it constantly hops forward indiscriminately over huge chunks of the movie as it plays?
That's roughly the same approach to plotting Akiva Goldsman seems to have used while adapting this for book for film. Either that, or he works with an editor that secretly hates him.
