Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Dc E — 07 Feb 2012
"Winter's Bone" 10 Scale Rating: 8.0 (Really Good) ...
I'm making my way through some of the Academy Award hopefuls. This movie was on my list long before I knew it was possibly up for any awards, but I moved it up.
"Winter's Bone" is set in the Ozarks, near the Missouri/Arkansas border. It follows a 17 year old girl named Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) who is raising her two siblings alone. Her mother is suffering from a mental problem that has caused her to stop speaking and her father is on the run from the law for dealing drugs. He has a court date coming up, and he used the land and house that Ree lives on to bail himself out of jail. If she doesn't find him in seven days, she will lose her home.
"Winter's Bone" is one of the better movies of 2010 and should be up for Best Picture. Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job as Ree and should be up for an award herself. I genuinely cared about what happened to her and her family. There are a lot of people standing in her way, and you honestly want them all to suffer in the end. When a movie can make you feel that way, it is well written.
There are few negatives, but it does slow down at times. That and there are several scenes that come across as random that show you what life is like for her and her family.
