Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Stephen S — 01 Apr 2012
I can hardly keep from giggling as I say the name of this movie out loud, but Winter's Bone is NOT hilarious - except for one scene in which Jennifer Lawrence is lying in a pool of her own blood - but I don't want to give anything away.
(And really, that scene wasn't that funny, but I can imagine the audience in the theater collectively chortling with some relief from all the DRAMA.).
If I were to describe WB in TV terms, I would suggest it's The Waltons meets The Killing, with just a hint of Deliverance.
I thought it was great. Not great like Star Wars great, but it was a good story told well through the medium of film - which is all too rare these days.
Side note: I know nothing of Hunger Games other than it might also be a diet fad among sororities, but it's pretty easy to see why Jennifer Lawrence was selected to be the lead as she carries all of WB on her slim shoulders.
