Review of Winter Sleep (2014) by Mique W — 22 Dec 2014
Ceylan's triptych, a film in 3 movements and the relation of 3 family members, is far from his best (Distant, Climates, and Anatolia). Bergman did an excellent job in Scenes from a Marriage, a similar theme. Also Tarr did better with 3+ hour-movies (and his 9-hour SatanTango) although Winter Sleep's main problem isn't time. Winter Sleep falls short in its narrative: clichà (C)d and predictable actions and reactions.
Otherwise the film has many Ceylan fine moments of comedy of real life, something he always does well (slipping on snow, man in a woman's slippers, car malfunction...).
Makes you wonder why Anatolia didn't win the Palm D'Or.
