Review of Winter Sleep (2014) by Peter F — 12 May 2015
Ceylan's latest film is another sprawling and emotive piece that isn't without its meanderings, but overall stands a very absorbing picture. Novel-esque in it's structure, the film examines it's characters through a close lens.
The camera work is beautiful (one of the best horse-riding scenes in recent memory), but the film's strongest card is actually the dialogue. Ceylan's philosophical musings and intricate character interactions makes the film palpable, even if it sacrifices some subtlety.
At three hours the film is a bit too long, but this remains a potent film from Turkey's most efficient contemporary director.
