Review of Winter Sleep (2014) by Lyn — 10 Jul 2015
To enjoy "Winter Sleep," it will help to have a high tolerance for films in which people talk endlessly about their ideas, grudges, disappointments and uncertainties. I tend to like that sort of thing, so I enjoyed it.
Like the Michael Douglas character in "Wonder Boys" and the soulful Italian lead in "The Great Beauty," the main character is grappling with some mid/late life struggles. Unfortunately, he lacks the ability to truly connect with people that seems to save the guys in those other two films.
His conflicted conversations with the women in his life are painful ... and though it goes on more than three hours, I would have loved maybe five more minutes that hinted at how ANY of these lives might turn out! The bleakly beautiful scenery is a haunting character in its own right, and if you didn't have to follow the subtitles, listening to the Turkish language is fascinating, as well.
