It seems we've reached an era when indie films can be just as self-satisfied and cookie-cutter as mainstream movies, which, in a sad way, must be a sign of progress for the industry. I guess that makes it a compliment to say that the screenplay could have been written by a computer.
Okay, so it'd be an uncannily trend-conscious and quirky computer, but it'd still be a computer. For all that, this is nothing new.
