Review of Winter Passing (2006) by Frankie A — 25 Jun 2008
An engaging and well-paced film about going home and trying to sort out your shit with your parent. Not an original theme but the acting is restrained, the characters are fresh and the melancholy mood heightens the drama.
Zooey Deschanel's character Reese, is in deep pain from being abandoned and her trip home brings connection with her dad in the end of his days, as well as with her dad's posse; a quirky protector-friend-caregiver-handyman played by Will Ferrell, and a former female student of similar age who has both her own tragic past and a true devotion to Reese's dad.
The entire cast, especially Ed Harris seem to be in a low-key rhythm that worked for me. Not a comedic approach like Royal Tenenbaums, Dan in Real Life, or The Family Stone.
