Review of Winter Light (1963) by Anne F — 05 Jul 2009
This is the second film in Bergman's 'Silence of God' trilogy - I found it had strong links to 'Through a Glass Darkly' which I liked, rather than 'The Silence' which I didn't.
'Winter Light' is a very cold, bleak film, centred around Christ's words on the cross, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" A priest confronts his loss of faith and we see how this affects his ex-mistress, a suicidal parishioner, the parishioner's wife and others. The film has perhaps the most stunningly hateful speech I have seen on film, but although as a whole it is has a wintry bleakness, the ambiguous ending has (imo) hope.
