Review of Winter Light (1963) by Dan D — 21 Jan 2010
Easily the most dialogue driven Bergman I've seen (and that's saying a lot), but the lack of physical plot is justified by the brutal despair and emotional turmoil of the faith-losing reverend and his admiring, aging schoolteacher.
The scene in which he tells the spinster he doesn't love her because she is a "parody" of his late wife and he hates her "anxiety and poor digestion" is chilling.
