Review of Winnie the Pooh (2011) by Gaspar O — 28 May 2012
Very nice, very unmistakably Pooh. At about 70 minutes and with the feeling that a few shorter stories (missing honey, backson, Eeyore's tail) were thrown together into a feature script, 2011's WINNIE THE POOH feels a lot like Disney's original Pooh film, 1977's MANY ADVENTURES, a mash-up of shorts.
Which, don't get me wrong, is great: it may not have the depth of a legit feature, but it's witty and smoothly dynamic. The first reboot, 2000's TIGGER MOVIE, had a more penetrating, hefty tone, but it wasn't as pretty in its art or music. The original was stunningly beautiful, and this one is great... the animation (for instance, "The Backson Song" and "A Honey Happy Ending" song interludes) is whimsical but crisp, and the music (most by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, with a theme by Zooey Deschanel) is for the most part pretty sweet and well done.
It also continues Lasseter's renaissance at Disney, after 2008's BOLT and 2009's PRINCESS & THE FROG revitalized solid back-to-basics narrative.
