Review of Winnie the Pooh (2011) by Bancho — 24 Jul 2011
It's kind of like a plain Hershey chocolate bar. You like it and enjoy it; but it would be better with a little more of something. While I enjoyed the fresh-ness of the 2-D animation and a true-interpretation of the beloved characters, I swear that I have seen this story before.
Eeyore loses his tail, Pooh searches for honey and Tigger gets disguised as the monstrous, Baksun! There was just nothing NEW in this retelling of Winnie the Pooh, and perhaps that is a good thing as it remains pure to Milne's work; but today we need just a little something to set it apart from some of the other Pooh retellings.
I did NOT dislike this film although it is rather short (under an hour running time!) so it might be a better rental. I appreciated the original song at the end written and recorded by Zooey Deschanel (Elf).
Winnie the Pooh is a timeless classic ... and this retelling gives us classic Pooh. It is lovely to look at and the characters are just as endearing as ever (not too bright, though) -- but if you are looking for something new and original, this isn't the version for you.
