Review of Wings of Desire (1987) by Derek B — 16 Jan 2009
This gentle and touching film genuinely needs to be seen in a cinema to grasp it's real beauty. The cinematography is marvellous and the sounds - some so subtle you wouldn't pick them up on a DVD/broadcast - give it a real intensity of mood.
I'm not a huge fan of Wim Wenders but he got it right this time. The cast are all fantastic, and how great to see early Nick Cave footage woven into the narrative. The Hollywood remake (City Of Angels) is a complete travesty.
The sequel, unfortunately, is really very weak indeed.
