Review of Wings of Desire (1987) by Marc L — 19 Oct 2009
The first half is a dreamlike, surreal, hypnotic tour of humanity through the eyes of ethereal Angels watching over Berlin, filmed in gorgeous, fluid black & white. One Angel's decision to become human takes the sweeping overhead camerawork and plants it firmly at ground level, in the stark reality of a vivid color Berlin.
What makes this a masterpiece is the way you're left feeling a powerful sense of your own humanity, as if for the first time. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds play a Berlin bar toward the end that is one of my favorite musical performances captured on film.
