"Wings of Desire" focuses on angels who want to become human (itself an idea that could so easily become unbearably sentimental) and pulls it off partly by intellectualizing the situation (the closing monologues in particular).
It is beautifully shot throughout and has cameos by Columbo and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
