Cinematic perfection. From its elegant sweeping city shots to its exquisitely drawn characters to its wonderfully composed and selected music to its thought-provoking optimism, Wim Wenders' 1987 masterpiece has just about everything one could want in a movie.
The film must be seen twice because the first viewing is such a trip for the senses, but there is also a deep literary poetry that must be given one's full attention. Wenders smartly casts self reflexive roles- Pater Falk, Nick Cave- but is careful to use them as supporting players for his two gorgeous fictional characters, played by Bruno Ganz and Solveig Dommartin.
This- an amalgam of actors, as Bazin would put it- makes for a delightful twist of fact and fiction which hypnotizes and teaches. See it for its loving ode to human life; see it for its unafraid look at death and suicide; see it for its flawless cinematography.
Just see it.
