Review of Wings of Desire (1987) by Jacob G — 19 Aug 2010
While long and a bit tedious, yet Wings of Desire engages in a simplistic beauty that both shows the beauty of humanity and the beauty in our faults.
A rare film that I really enjoyed that is less about characters are more about a concept. The main character is nice in his own way, and his angel friend is pretty cool, too. But neither are characters you would normally hang your hat on as being a driving force in a movie. That isn't to say none of the characters are interesting--Peter Falk is beautiful in his role as, well, Peter Falk. Still, not even the lady interest in the film sparked my imagination.
As I said, it is about a concept more than characters.
The film could have cut out about 30 minutes to really tighten things up a bit and keep the beginning/middle parts from getting repetitive. The end part really regains a lot of momentum, particularly with a beautiful live performance from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
