Review of Wings (1966) by Erik G — 11 Sep 2008
1927 was such a strong year for the American silent film that even though there were five movies even better than Wings (Sunrise [the other Best Picture winner], Love, The Kid Brother, The General, and The Unknown), one can still say that this was a sensible Best Picture Oscar Winner.
It's a great combination of action (all filmed with honest-to-goodness real airplanes) and melodrama, with moving, fine-stroked details of the tragedies of combat (a short scene that involves a cigarette stubbed out after a shell explodes is stuck in my memory).
