Review of Wing Chun (1994) by Jonas C — 12 Feb 2012
Wing Chun is a martial arts film with an unusual feminist tilt, inspired by a real historical figure. In 19th century China, a group of bandits attacks a remote village, attempting to kidnap a beautiful young widow named Charmy.
However, they are deceived by Yim Wing Chun, owner of a local tofu shop that also happens to be a fearsome fighter, she almost single-handedly beat the thieves. This infuriates the evil bandit leader, who makes his full strength against the city in an effort to recover Charmy.
As if this were not problem enough, things become even more difficult for the Wing Chun when her childhood sweetheart, now also a master of martial arts, comes to town after an absence of many years. On his return, he immediately falls in love with Charmy, mistaking her for Wing Chun - and mistaking the real Wing Chun for a man.
