Review of Windtalkers (2002) by Kevin M — 13 Oct 2007
On the flipside, here's a farce that pretends to have an anti-war slant. How is the pro-peace message conveyed? By showing an exaggerated version of the taking of Saipan, which could not have been accomplished without Nic Cage's superb aiming skills.
Imagine Tequila Yuen running through trenches with guns blazing and you have most of the action sequences. And there are a lot. The highlight is when the gorgeous Kualoa Valley on Oahu's North Shore (a 20 minute drive from my house) gets obliterated by naval artillery.
Too bad John Woo has to cut to laughably low-quality stock footage of these guns opening fire. There is a stellar cast mostly wasted here (in more than one sense). Peter Stormare even shows up, and surprise, he plays "The Swede".
I thoroughly enjoyed what happened to Christian Slater. If you can believe it, the director's cut contains about a solid half hour of more carnage and mayhem. Perfect for the budding pacifist in your life.
