Review of Windtalkers (2002) by Scott P — 19 Aug 2008
John Woo needs to stay away from war films. His brilliance is with modern action flicks.
The major problem with Windtalkers is the script, second is Cage. Nicolas Cage floats around camera time with little interest. His character is extremely boring and uninteresting. The script also sets up for his character to do stupid heroic acts when he won't listen to orders.
The camera work is fine ,but the editing choices are poor. It makes the audience aware that in the beginning scene the actors are leaping from explosions far away. There's also Woo's trademark slow motion action shots ,but none really capture the emotional impact they should.
It all comes down to the package, wrong script, wrong actors, wrong director, wrong editing, poor film. The film is really dull and hokey. Its watchable.
This movie is based on true events, I don't know how true, and if these events did happen, I wish the people involved weren't as stupid as those in Windtalkers.
